FAQ 1. Why yet another theatre company? Because precious few companies exist that concentrate on the great swashbucklers (THE THREE MUSKETEERS, CYRANO, THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL). I know of none in Colorado (or the Rocky Mountain region, for that matter) that have that as their mission. These are wonderful audience-pleasing plays that are great fun for the performers and designers. We have also noticed a decided lack of training opportunities in high schools and colleges for the type of presentational theatre that these plays require. Most acting programs focus on the modern realist style, and "Method" acting is not necessarily the best way to approach the scripts we will do. Our training sessions, which will eventually open to the acting community at large, will concentrate on voice/speech, period movement (the costumes pose unusual challenges for actors), props (fans, walking sticks, swords, etc.), weapon work, standard American stage speech, dialects, singing, script analysis, theatre history, period music, and so on. We will also train designers and fight directors in the particular skills needed for plays written, or set, in the years 1575-1830. Opportunities to train with other companies will be utilized to the fullest extent. I expect to see our actors at A TASTE OF SHAKESPEARE workshops, in particular.
2. Where will you perform? We are still trying to determine that. THE THREE MUSKETEERS was performed on October 28, 2006 at the Longmont Performing Arts Center, which kindly donated the space for charity. As we hope to be allied with Niwot High School's Swashbuckler Club, that should give us access to St. Vrain School District facilities, but that is up in the air as of this writing. Being authorized a stage and getting onto its schedule can be two different things. With our streamlined style of presentation, we could perform nearly anyplace with a stage space of around 25 by 25 feet, even outdoors (most of us have extensive outdoor performing experience). While we are finalizing our mainstage space, POINTED REMARQUES will be seen at Longmont ArtWalk and every other festival we can get into. Look for the extravagantly-overdressed peacocks slinging steel at one another in the street. That will be us! Our News page will have current information.
3. What will your ticket prices be? As low as our continued existence will permit. We don't want to price any audience member out of a seat. These plays are done infrequently enough that an opportunity to see them shouldn't be missed due to any financial concern. When our budget has been set we will have a better idea what we will have to bring in to stay afloat. POINTED REMARQUES educational theatre company is a non-profit and none of us are paid a dime, so our monetary needs will primarily be for insurance, venue rental, fabric purchase, weapon acquisition, and publicity.
4. Are you really planning to host a swashbuckling play festival? That is true. POINTED REMARQUES hopes to hold a weekend of swashbuckling adventure with our first invitational festival. Original one-act plays will be presented as the end result of a contest to encourage new work in this genre. Watch our News page for updates on this exciting project.
